Path of blood through the heart:

1. Right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from inferior and superior vena cavae

2. Blood is pumped into right ventricle through tricuspid valve

3. Right ventricle contracts to send blood through the pulmonary arteries (the only arteries that carry deoxygenated blood)

4. Gas exchange occurs within capillary networks of the lungs

5. Oxygenated blood is pushed to the left atrium via the pulmonary veins (the only veins that carry deoxygenated blood)

6. Right atrium contracts pushing blood through mitral valve into left ventricle

7. Left ventricle contracts powerfully to force blood into aorta
